Mid Missouri Judo

Mid Missouri Judo has been part of Columbia’s martial arts scene since 1963, operating continuously from its current location on East Broadway. The academy’s instruction is led by a team including black belts Steve O’Rourke and Joseph Cooney, along with brown and green belt instructors. Their approach centers on traditional judo techniques, with classes structured to serve a broad age range—from children as young as five to adults. Kids under 13 focus on throws and pins without submission holds, while teens and adults engage in both standing techniques (tachi-waza) and groundwork (ne-waza). The schedule supports steady progression through skill levels, offering separate classes for kids and teens, as well as combined sessions for older teens and adults. Family classes encourage participation across generations, emphasizing fitness and character development in a disciplined setting. Open mat sessions provide informal practice time where students can drill techniques and receive feedback, often using video review to refine form. Private lessons are also available for personalized instruction. Mid Missouri Judo maintains a clear focus on judo as a sport and martial art rather than blending in other grappling styles.
