MCBJJ - Marcelo Cavalcanti Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Carson is led by Professor Marcelo Cavalcanti, a 4th degree black belt whose journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. Marcelo’s training roots run deep, with formative years under Grandmaster Carlson Gracie, Ricardo Liborio, Marcus Vinicius, and Roberto “Gordo” Corrêa, before earning his black belt from Rigan Machado in 2003. Since founding his academy, Marcelo has dedicated himself to sharing his knowledge with students of all ages and backgrounds, emphasizing both technical skill and personal growth. On the mats, the academy offers a clear progression for adults and children alike. Beginners start with a fundamentals program focused on building a strong technical base, while intermediate and advanced students work on refining strategy and applying their skills in live sparring. Gi and no-gi training are both part of the curriculum, and there are dedicated classes for women and for those interested in MMA. The kids’ program is structured to teach not just technique, but also confidence and discipline—values Marcelo credits as essential to success both in Jiu-Jitsu and in life. Marcelo’s approach is shaped by decades of competition and coaching, with students and the academy itself earning podium finishes at tournaments such as Grappler’s Quest, Worlds, Pan-Ams, and IBJJF Opens. The coaching staff includes experienced instructors for both youth and adult classes, and the academy regularly offers open mat sessions with drop-ins welcome. Beyond regular training, Marcelo remains active in the wider community, running seminars and outreach programs in local schools and organizations.
