Matadero Jiu Jitsu Brea is guided by co-owners Kristofer Udan and Omar Gastelum, who bring decades of combined martial arts experience to the school. Kristofer, a martial artist since 2008 with a background in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, kickboxing, and MMA, emphasizes safety and comprehensive skill development, holding First Aid and CPR certifications. Omar began training under Rodrigo Medeiros in the mid-90s and returned to the mats in 2019, earning a blue belt under Fredrick Gumm. Their shared focus is on fostering discipline, confidence, and physical fitness through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and related martial arts, while creating a space where families can train together. Training at Matadero Brea covers a full spectrum of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu programs, including gi and no-gi classes for kids and adults. The kids’ curriculum introduces fundamental positions, escapes, and submissions, progressing to advanced techniques like joint locks and sweeps, alongside life skills such as respect and perseverance. Adults can expect structured fundamentals classes as well as intermediate and advanced sessions, with opportunities for sparring and open mat practice. The school also integrates kickboxing and MMA, offering striking and sparring classes multiple evenings per week to complement grappling skills. The academy operates out of a wheelchair-accessible facility in Brea, California, with a schedule designed to accommodate both youth and adult practitioners. Classes run throughout the week, including morning sessions for younger students and evening classes for adults. Drop-in training is accepted, allowing flexibility for visitors. Matadero Jiu Jitsu Brea’s approach balances technical instruction with mental and physical conditioning, aiming to build resilience and camaraderie among students without relying on competitive accolades or marketing claims.
