602 Crabb River Rd, Richmond, TX
Markle BJJ in Richmond, Texas, was founded and is led by Professor James Markle, a third-degree black belt with a martial arts journey that began in the Midwest and took root in Texas. After years competing in grappling since 1989 and training in disciplines like Taekwondo, Judo, Sambo, and Aikido, Professor Markle found his calling in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 1999. In 2015, after more than a decade of dedication, he became the first American to earn a black belt under Jorge “Macaco” Patino, a respected figure in the BJJ world. Alongside Professor Chris Hill, a black belt with a strong wrestling background, Markle BJJ brings together a coaching team that values both tradition and practical experience. Classes at Markle BJJ reflect this wide-ranging background. The academy offers gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for adults and kids, with programs designed to build fundamentals and allow for steady progression. There’s a dedicated Family Jiu-Jitsu class, making it possible for parents and children to train together on the mats. While Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the core, the schedule also includes wrestling, boxing, and Muay Thai, giving students the chance to round out their skills and learn from coaches who have competed and coached across multiple disciplines. The academy is located on Crabb River Road and is equipped with accessible parking and wheelchair access. Drop-ins are welcome, and the gym is known for being open to both new and experienced grapplers. Markle BJJ’s approach is rooted in the belief that martial arts training builds more than technique—it’s about discipline, resilience, and learning from one another, whether you’re preparing for competition or stepping onto the mat for the first time.
