Mark Turner BJJ in Naperville is led by Professor Mark Turner, the first non-Brazilian black belt under five-time world champion and UFC veteran Demian Maia. Mark brings a deep competitive background, having tested himself at major Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments in Brazil, the United States, and Europe, but his real passion is teaching. His philosophy centers on ensuring students not only drill and practice techniques, but also truly understand how and why each movement works—emphasizing that technique can overcome differences in strength or athleticism. Classes run seven days a week and cover Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for adults and children at all levels, as well as dedicated women’s self-defense sessions. The curriculum reflects Mark’s detailed, principle-driven approach, with plenty of time devoted to both fundamentals and the reasoning behind each position or transition. Students can expect to work through structured classes that balance technical instruction, drilling, and live training, with options for both gi and no-gi formats depending on the schedule. The coaching staff includes long-time student and brown belt John Wolnik, who brings his own experience as a competitor and a background in sports strength and conditioning. Both Mark and John are hands-on instructors, often training alongside students and sharing insights from years on the mats. Young students benefit from specialized kids’ classes, designed to build both skill and confidence from an early age.
