Claim this gymMako Brazilian BJJ and Kickboxing in Tucson is led by Mike MacGregor, a seasoned black belt with deep experience in both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and striking arts. Alongside a team of black belts including Ivan Salazar, Aaron Snitzer, Chris Obeso, Gerald Garland, Natalie Garland, Brian Barrett, and Heather Raftery, Mike has built an academy that emphasizes real-world self-defense, technical skill, and personal growth. The coaching staff’s diverse backgrounds in grappling and kickboxing shape the school’s practical, detail-oriented approach on the mats. Day-to-day training at Mako is structured to meet students where they are, with programs for every age and stage. The kids’ Jiu-Jitsu curriculum is divided into three levels: Level 1 for ages 4–6, Level 2 for 7–9, and Level 3 for 10–13, ensuring the right mix of challenge and safety as children develop. Teens who have outgrown youth classes can move into a dedicated program that bridges the gap before adult training. For adults, the academy offers both gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with classes that range from fundamentals to advanced and competition-focused sessions. Open mats and kickboxing classes are also available for those looking to round out their training. Mako’s kickboxing program is open to both kids (ages 7 and up) and adults, and can be taken as a standalone discipline or alongside Jiu-Jitsu. The striking classes emphasize coordination, control, and real-world application, echoing the academy’s overall philosophy. Drop-ins are welcome for most adult classes and open mats, making it easy for visitors and regulars alike to get quality training in Tucson.
