London Ju Jitsu - West Wickham operates out of Hawes Down Junior School, offering a traditional Japanese Ju Jitsu experience rooted in techniques developed during the Samurai era. The academy traces its curriculum to Yoshin Ryu Jujitsu, an Edo-period style known for its emphasis on yielding and technique over brute strength. Founded in 2002, London Ju Jitsu is part of the Fighting Arts Organisation of Great Britain, with leadership from Shihan Chris Lacy, a 6th Dan Black Belt with over four decades of martial arts experience, including Judo, Karate, and Kickboxing. His title of Shihan, awarded in 2023, reflects a deep commitment to teaching and preserving Ju Jitsu’s classical methods adapted for modern self-defence. Training sessions at the West Wickham location include adult classes on Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons, alongside children’s classes divided by age groups, ensuring tailored instruction for under 10s and under 16s. The curriculum focuses on practical self-defence skills, integrating throws, joint locks, strikes, and chokes in a safe and disciplined environment. The academy also emphasises progression through the ranks, guided by experienced instructors like Sensei Ian Ferguson and Sensei Dan Fraser, both black belts with extensive backgrounds in Ju Jitsu and complementary martial arts such as Boxing, Judo, and Aikido. The academy’s philosophy prioritises technique and adaptability, reflecting the “way of yielding” principle exemplified by the willow tree metaphor central to Yoshin Ryu teachings. Classes maintain a balance between tradition and relevance, preparing students for real-world scenarios without relying on physical strength.
