Claim this gymLondon Grapple was founded in Deptford, South East London, by Steve, Ross Nicholls and Aidan Woodhouse, who came together during the Covid lockdowns when they started training on makeshift mats at a local bike café. Their aim was to create a different kind of martial arts gym: clear and concise instruction, a relaxed approach to training, and an open-door policy for visitors. Since opening in August 2021, the academy has established itself as a major hub for no-gi grappling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA in London, driven by a team of over a dozen experienced coaches led by Ross Nicholls (Head Grappling Coach) and Matt Inman (Head MMA Coach). Training at London Grapple is structured to suit everyone from complete beginners to seasoned competitors. The weekly schedule includes over 60 classes, with gi and no-gi BJJ, submission grappling, wrestling, MMA and Muay Thai available every day. Beginners are guided through dedicated fundamentals sessions, while advanced students can mix in competition rounds, open mats and cross-training in striking or wrestling. Children’s BJJ and Muay Thai classes run on separate days for different age groups, and adults can choose from early morning, daytime and evening sessions. The academy welcomes drop-ins and encourages cross-training, making it a popular stop for both London locals and visitors from further afield. In 2024, London Grapple expanded its footprint by opening a second facility just metres from the original Unit 17 location, doubling its mat space and further broadening its striking and grappling timetable. The founders’ original vision—combining high-level coaching with a flexible, student-led approach—remains central to the academy’s philosophy. Members can train as hobbyists or athletes, with no pressure to follow rigid traditions or long-term contracts, and are supported by a coaching team whose expertise spans BJJ, MMA, wrestling and Muay Thai.
