Live Oak Jiu Jitsu Academy is led by co-owner and head instructor Alejandro Lucas, a second-degree black belt under Renato Magno. Alex began training at age 26 and has since developed a curriculum that spans youth, adult, fundamentals, and women’s programs, emphasizing a blend of modern and traditional techniques rooted in self-defense and competition. His coaching style is strategic and systems-based, and he has earned top honors in his age division at the NABJJF in both 2017 and 2023. The academy’s mission centers on using Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a tool for personal development, leadership, and confidence, particularly for youth facing challenges like bullying. Students at Live Oak train in a variety of structured programs. Adults have access to gi and no-gi classes, including fundamentals, women-only seminars, and competition preparation, with a focus on practical techniques such as leg locks and wrestling takedowns. The youth program serves children aged 6 to 12 and teens 13 to 17, teaching fundamentals alongside emotional regulation and respect. For the youngest practitioners, the Sprouts program introduces preschoolers aged 3 to 5 to martial arts basics through games and animal movements, incorporating elements of judo and wrestling. All youth instructors are live scanned for safety, and the academy participates in local homeschool and charter school programs. Classes are held in a wheelchair-accessible facility at 910 Texas St, Fairfield, and drop-ins are accepted for most sessions, including open mat times. Co-owner Jose Meza and instructor Chris Park support the curriculum, bringing experience from their own training backgrounds. Park, who earned his black belt in 2024, coaches youth and adult classes with a creative approach, while Meza focuses on fundamentals and choke techniques, especially within the youth and Sprouts programs. The academy’s layered instruction aims to develop technical skill and mental resilience across all ages.
