Levitate Jiu Jitsu was founded by Rocco DeTillio, a 2nd degree black belt who began his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey in 2007. After serving in the United States Navy and competing in both BJJ and MMA, Rocco established the academy to share the art’s benefits with the Amherst community. He earned his black belt under Professor Jose Dias of Gracie Barra in Rio de Janeiro, carrying forward a traditional lineage while building a school focused on practical self-defense and personal growth. The academy offers structured classes for adults and children, starting with fundamentals and progressing to advanced live and positional training. Adult students can train in both gi and no-gi formats, with sessions dedicated to beginners, all-levels groups, and specialized judo for BJJ. Kids’ programs are divided by age group, with gi classes for ages 5-8 and 9 and up, as well as no-gi classes for both age brackets. Morning and evening class options make it possible for students with varied schedules to train consistently. Levitate Jiu Jitsu welcomes visitors and drop-ins, and the facility is wheelchair accessible. Group privates for families and friends, as well as supplemental cardio kickboxing, round out the offerings. Rocco remains closely involved in teaching all age groups, drawing on his experience as a competitor, instructor, and veteran to guide students on and off the mats.
