Jacksonville Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy, known as Jax BJJ, has been a fixture in Neptune Beach since 2006, but its roots stretch back to the 1990s when Professor Larry Shealy began teaching students on mats in a rented storage unit dubbed the “Hot Box.” Over the decades, the academy has grown into a staple for grapplers in the Jacksonville area, drawing hobbyists, competitive athletes, law enforcement, and military personnel alike. Jax BJJ’s curriculum blends Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at its core with elements of wrestling, judo, mixed martial arts, and self-defense. While most members train for lifestyle and personal growth, the academy has also supported athletes who have medaled at local competitions and major international events such as Worlds and Pans. The school’s approach emphasizes consistent self-improvement, both on and off the mats, with a focus on building strength, resilience, and confidence through regular training. Adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes are offered in the evenings, making it accessible for working professionals and those balancing busy schedules. The club welcomes drop-in visitors and provides wheelchair access at its Atlantic Boulevard location.
