Ithaca Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was founded in 2021 by Professor Matt Sung Lee, a 2nd-degree black belt with over 25 years of martial arts experience. Originally from Seoul, Korea, Matt competed in professional MMA, boxing, and Muay Thai before focusing on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. After years of traveling and coaching internationally, he settled in Ithaca to create a training space where both kids and adults can build confidence and skills through disciplined practice. Classes at Ithaca BJJ School cover all ages and skill levels, starting with fundamentals for white belts and progressing to intermediate and advanced training. The curriculum includes gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with separate classes for kids and youth that emphasize personal growth alongside technique. Adults have access to regular no-gi sessions as well as open mat times for extra drilling and sparring. The school also offers sibling discounts and introductory memberships to encourage family participation. The academy is located at 40 Catherwood Road in Ithaca, NY, inside a wheelchair-accessible facility. Matt’s approach focuses on creating a safe, structured environment where students develop not only as martial artists but also as individuals. He draws on his background coaching fighters and teaching children worldwide to guide his instruction, aiming to inspire motivation and self-confidence through consistent training.
