2016 S 320th St Suite C, Federal Way, WA
Isla Jiu Jitsu Academy in Federal Way was founded by Jeff Macatangay, who established the academy to build a space where personal growth and family balance are as important as technical skill. Jeff’s journey began with a search for work-life balance after moving to Washington, and his experience with Jiu Jitsu transformed his priorities. Since 2009, first under a different name and now as Isla, he has been dedicated to creating a school where students are encouraged to support each other, develop independence, and take pride in their progress. The academy’s teaching philosophy emphasizes humility, respect, and adaptability. Lessons are designed to allow students to personalize techniques to suit their own movement and style, building independence and confidence on and off the mats. Isla’s instructors are known for their technical backgrounds and their ability to connect with students of all ages, ensuring that each person receives individual attention and feedback. Many former students have returned as instructors, continuing the cycle of mentorship and growth that defines the school’s culture. Isla Jiu Jitsu offers a full slate of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu programs for adults and youth. Kids are grouped into Tiny (ages 4–6), Littles (7–8), and Junior (9–11), with additional classes for teens (12–15), and there are options for both gi and no-gi training for children and adults. Adult classes include all-levels, advanced, and women’s sessions, as well as regular open mats. The academy is wheelchair accessible and welcomes drop-ins for most classes, reflecting its commitment to making Jiu Jitsu accessible to the wider Federal Way community.
