Iron Roots Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is known for hands-on, detailed instruction from experienced black belts with deep roots in the art. The academy is led by Professor Dan Ries, who has trained since 2008 and earned his black belt under Paul Tom of the Flavio Behring North American Association. Dan is joined by Professor Erin Johnson, a lifelong martial artist who started as a child in 2003 and also received her black belt from Professor Tom. Both instructors are active competitors, with Dan medaling at major IBJJF no-gi events and Erin earning podium finishes at both gi and no-gi championships, as well as competing in EBI Combat Jiu Jitsu. They are supported by coach Jordan Titoni, a lifelong wrestler and accomplished MMA fighter and coach, bringing additional expertise in striking and wrestling to the program. Training at Iron Roots covers the full spectrum of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and martial arts. Adult programs focus on both gi and no-gi instruction, with a strong technical foundation and an emphasis on personal growth. The kids’ curriculum is divided into Ninja Kids and Samurai Kids classes, allowing instruction to be tailored to different age groups and developmental levels. Women’s classes and special self-defense camps, including collaborations with the Elizabeth Smart Foundation, reinforce the school’s commitment to practical skills and personal empowerment—especially for women and girls. The academy further offers Muay Thai kickboxing, mixed martial arts, and “Smart Defense” programs, all taught by instructors with real competition and coaching backgrounds. Students at Iron Roots can expect a variety of ways to train, including structured classes, open mat sessions for adults, private lessons, and custom coaching. The facility is wheelchair accessible and designed to be a safe space for learning, with a focus on respect, discipline, and individual progress. The school’s leadership is committed to continuous learning, and the welcoming atmosphere is backed by instructors who see themselves as lifelong students as well as teachers.
