Insight Brazilian Jiu Jitsu / Renzo Gracie - Bastrop has been anchored in Bastrop since 2014, serving as the headquarters for a growing team of affiliate schools across Texas and Kentucky. The academy is led by Professor Alex Henley, a Bastrop native with deep roots in the community, a second-degree BJJ black belt, certified Judo black belt, and Level 1 Army Combatives Trainer. Alex brings decades of experience to the mats, having competed and trained in ten countries, and is an IBJJF and NAGA champion. He’s raised his own family in Bastrop and built the school around the idea that martial arts can shape character and confidence in both kids and adults. Classes at Insight BJJ cover a broad range of martial arts, including structured Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in both gi and no-gi formats, judo, and striking arts such as Muay Thai and MMA. The schedule is designed to serve everyone from first-timers to competitors, with morning and evening options, and programs for adults and children starting at age three. There’s a dedicated women’s BJJ class, youth leadership program, and both adult and junior judo. The school emphasizes practical skill development and real self-defense, with a flexible curriculum that adapts to the needs of the students rather than following a rigid corporate script. The team at Insight BJJ includes multiple black belt instructors and is known locally for having the highest number of black belts and certified judo black belts in Bastrop County. Classes are kept structured and safe, with several instructors on the mat at all times to ensure quality instruction and attention to detail. The facility is wheelchair accessible and kept clean with daily sanitizing routines. Drop-ins and visitors are welcomed, and the school maintains an informal, approachable atmosphere—no bowing to photos on the wall, just focused training and a commitment to helping students grow on and off the mats.
