Imperial Grappling Perth, Wrestling & Jiu Jitsu in Clarkson was founded in 2015 by Cleve Williams and is now owned and led on the mats by Adam Toole. Adam’s background sets the tone for the academy—he is a career freestyle wrestler, starting at age eight in Manchester, who went on to become a national champion and represent Great Britain internationally. After decades coaching wrestling, Adam earned his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Cleve Williams, following a direct Will-Machado lineage that traces back through John Will, Rigan Machado, Carlos Gracie Jr, and Carlos Gracie. The club is an official Will-Machado representative. The focus at Imperial is straightforward: provide proper coaching in both grappling disciplines, with particular attention to wrestling fundamentals that many BJJ gyms overlook. Adam personally coaches every session, ensuring that technique—especially takedowns and standing exchanges—is taught with the depth of someone who has lived it for over 27 years. The approach is practical and hands-on, whether you are a four-year-old learning to fall safely or an adult looking to build real skill from the ground up. There is a small kids’ competition team for those interested, and Adam himself continues to compete. Classes run for kids, teens and adults, with both gi and no-gi BJJ as well as freestyle wrestling on offer. Beginners can start in shorts and a t-shirt, and there’s no expectation of previous experience. The club does not currently have an adult competition team beyond Adam, but the structure and attention to coaching detail support progress at any level. All coaches hold first aid qualifications, and the club maintains a focus on helping each student reach their personal best, whether that’s competing or simply building confidence and fitness.
