Hurricane Jiu Jitsu

Hurricane Jiu Jitsu has been a fixture in Cleveland’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu scene since 2014, led by head instructor John Lawrence. John is a third-degree black belt under Pedro and Daniel Vianna of Vianna Brothers Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a lineage he has represented on the mats for nearly two decades. Before opening Hurricane, he started by teaching kids and adults at the Vianna Brothers school, while also building his own competition resume with appearances at the World and Pan American Championships and consistent podium finishes at major IBJJF events across the Midwest and beyond. The academy offers a full schedule of gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with classes structured for everyone from absolute beginners to experienced competitors. Adult programs include all-levels gi and no-gi, dedicated advanced no-gi sessions, and a fundamentals class called The Basics. Hurricane is also home to Cleveland’s largest women’s BJJ program, with both gi and no-gi classes specifically for women. Open drilling sessions give students time to focus on individual technique, and drop-ins are welcome for most classes. Kids can start training in both gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with age-appropriate instruction designed to build confidence and athleticism. The academy emphasizes safety and teaches students to train hard while respecting their partners, a philosophy that extends from the youngest beginners to the adult competition team. Hurricane Jiu Jitsu is located in the Warren Village Shopping Center and offers amenities such as parking and wheelchair accessibility.
