High Ground BJJ

High Ground BJJ in Greensburg, PA is led by head instructor Tommy Costa, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and judo brown belt who has spent his life immersed in martial arts. Tommy began training BJJ in 2005 and earned his black belt under Rodrigo “Baga” Ramos. With a foundation in boxing from his father, a former Golden Gloves champion, and further experience training under respected coaches like Damon Umholtz and Ken Perry, Tommy brings a wide-ranging perspective to his teaching. His competition resume includes gold at the 2016 IBJJF Miami Open and a winning record in Fight 2 Win Pro’s black belt division. Beyond the mats, Tommy has taught internationally at the University of Bologna and continues to advise collegiate jiu-jitsu programs. The schedule at High Ground BJJ reflects both Tommy’s technical background and the diverse expertise of the instructor team. The academy offers structured Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes for adults and kids, with BJJ basics and foundation classes led by Tommy and fellow black belt Dave Marghella. No-gi grappling is a major focus, with beginner classes, intermediate sessions, and advanced training for competitors available throughout the week. Students also have the chance to train in Muay Thai under Jake Just and MMA with Greg Olsen, a BJJ brown belt and experienced coach with roots in both striking and grappling. High Ground BJJ runs dedicated programs for kids ages 6–12 in both BJJ and MMA, making it a family-centered gym where multiple generations often train together. Classes are organized to welcome new students while giving experienced grapplers room to push themselves, and open mat sessions provide time for drilling and individual development. The academy has been part of the local martial arts scene since 2009 and continues to build on its tradition of technical instruction, competition experience, and lifelong martial arts education.
