Most students first notice the detailed, hands-on approach at High Country Jiu Jitsu. Classes break techniques down into specific sections, with instructors making sure nobody gets left behind. Whether it’s an adult learning the basics in the Intro to BJJ class or a kid drilling for their next competition, the instruction adapts to each person’s needs and goals. The gym offers regular gi and no-gi sessions for both adults and kids, plus open mats for anyone who wants extra rounds or time to experiment. Owner and head instructor Andrew Skaggs brings a deep background to the mats in Poncha Springs. He began his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey in 2008 and holds a black belt under Steve Toyryla, a 3rd degree black belt. Andrew’s training path has included Fairfax Jiu Jitsu, 50/50 Jiu Jitsu under Ryan Hall, Easton Jiu Jitsu under Eliot Marshall, and time at 10th Planet. After realizing there was no local jiu-jitsu school in the area, he opened High Country Jiu Jitsu in August 2022 to share his experience with the community. His own kids are regulars in the youth program, and the team includes dedicated youth instructors like Rainer Barnhart and Andy Astor, who bring backgrounds in both BJJ and other martial arts. Kids’ classes are divided by age, with programs for ages 5–7 and 8–13, including dedicated competition training for those who want to test themselves at tournaments. Open mat sessions are available throughout the week, and drop-ins are welcome. The academy is wheelchair accessible and intentionally structured to support everyone from first-day students to experienced grapplers looking to refine their skills.
