Heel Hooks Jiu Jitsu opened its doors in Chesapeake, Virginia in 2023, founded by Chester Wright, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under 2nd degree black belt Greg Walker. Wright has been training since 2012 and is known in the Tidewater area for his active competition background and for coaching some of the region’s top no-gi competitors. The academy quickly made its mark, earning team championships at both the NAGA Tidewater and Virginia Beach events in 2025 and 2026. The gym is dedicated to no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with a curriculum designed to emphasize dynamic movement, solid positional control, and a strong leg lock game. Classes are structured for clear progression: beginners start with fundamental positioning, submissions, and escapes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, while intermediate and advanced students meet on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for more complex techniques, including counters and leg attacks. Saturdays feature a two-hour open mat, offering extra time for sparring, drilling, and experimentation. Youth programs are a significant part of the schedule. The Lil' Badgers class introduces children ages 4–6 to no-gi jiu-jitsu twice a week, focusing on building confidence, respect, and good habits on the mat. Kids ages 7–12 can train Monday through Friday in dedicated no-gi classes. Heel Hooks Jiu Jitsu maintains a family-friendly atmosphere and welcomes drop-ins. The facility is wheelchair accessible and located at 801 Volvo Pkwy #125, serving Chesapeake’s growing grappling scene.
