Havering Jiu Jitsu Academy (BJJ ESSEX)

Havering Jiu Jitsu Academy (BJJ ESSEX) has been a fixture in Hornchurch since 2010, built on the vision of founder Professor David Tobin. With a black belt lineage tracing back to Ben Poppleton, the academy is rooted in the early British BJJ scene and has produced a number of European, British, and English champions in both gi and no-gi competition. The teaching approach is shaped by David’s dedication to the evolution of the sport, blending old-school fundamentals with new-school methods and a pronounced emphasis on no-gi submission grappling. The core of the adult programme is no-gi, with regular sessions focused on modern submission grappling, wrestling-based BJJ, and leg lock systems for which the team is particularly recognised. Traditional gi training is also offered once a week, ensuring students develop a well-rounded game and understand the roots of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Classes accommodate all experience levels, from complete beginners to advanced competitors, and are led by a diverse coaching team including black belts Ryan Ellis, Dominic Erk, and Hardeep Virdee, each bringing their own competitive and technical strengths to the mats. Saturday morning open mats are a regular feature, providing time for free sparring and technical exploration. For younger practitioners, the academy runs a structured kids’ programme for ages 5 to 15, prioritising discipline, focus and enjoyment while developing technical skill. Junior coaching is supported by instructors with backgrounds in both BJJ and other combat sports, such as judo and boxing, helping prepare children for competition if they wish to pursue it. The academy’s philosophy centres on creating a safe, clean and positive environment, empowering students of all ages to build confidence, resilience and practical self-defence skills within the context of the Hornchurch and Greater London martial arts community.
