930 Eldridge Dr unit b, Hagerstown, MD
Hagerstown Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy is led by Professor Mike Curran, a black belt who earned his rank from Roberto Marquez DaSilva, a Carlson Gracie lineage instructor. Mike brings over 30 years of experience across multiple martial arts including Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, wrestling, Krav Maga, and boxing. He currently holds a 3rd degree black belt under Carlos ‘David’ Oliveira and continues training in the ‘Bang’ Muay Thai system under Duane Ludwig. His background shapes a curriculum focused on discipline, self-control, and confidence, blending techniques for self-defense, fitness, and competition. The academy offers structured classes in both gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for adults, alongside specialized programs for kids that combine BJJ, kickboxing, and other activities. Women’s BJJ classes meet monthly, and open mat sessions provide extra time for sparring and drilling. Muay Thai training is integrated as well, reflecting the school’s status as an official affiliate of the ‘Bang’ Muay Thai system. Students preparing for tournaments or amateur and professional fights find support here, with coaching that emphasizes practical skills and mental toughness. Located on Eldridge Drive, the facility is wheelchair accessible and serves Hagerstown’s martial arts community with a focus on personal growth. The academy also runs after-school programs for children that include homework help and a mix of physical and creative activities. Professor Curran’s mission is to pass on the values and knowledge he has gathered, encouraging students to develop excellence both on and off the mats.
