Gulf Breeze Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (Checkmat)

Gulf Breeze Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is led by Chico Mendes, a multi-time IBJJF World Champion, alongside Janilson Bie. As a Checkmat academy, the school benefits from Mendes’s extensive competition experience and deep roots in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, bringing a level of instruction that is rare in smaller markets. Students in Gulf Breeze have the opportunity to train directly under a head coach with international credentials, linking the local mats to one of the sport’s most respected lineages. Day to day, the academy offers a traditional BJJ foundation balanced with a broad martial arts program. In addition to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Gulf Breeze BJJ runs adult and kids judo classes, as well as Muay Thai, kickboxing, and mixed martial arts. The schedule includes programs for children, adults, and homeschool students, making it possible for families to train together or for young athletes to fit classes into non-traditional school hours. The facility is wheelchair accessible, and the team’s Checkmat affiliation connects students to a global network known for high-level competition and technical development.
