Groundworks Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Bethesda is led by head instructor and owner Sean Diviney, a black belt under Fernando Yamasaki. Sean began his journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 1999 at the University of Colorado before returning to the DC area to train at Yamasaki Academy, where he has remained ever since. He brings decades of experience to the mats, including a Pan American silver medal and multiple IBJJF gold medals. The teaching team includes fellow black belts Chris Chi and Sean Lynch, both long-time Yamasaki students, as well as instructors Nigel Gibbs and Yifan Yang, each with their own deep roots in the art and a passion for guiding students through problem-solving on the mats. The academy’s approach is grounded in a games-based, ecological dynamics method that emphasizes learning through guided sparring and live training scenarios rather than rote drilling. Classes are structured to build real grappling skills such as timing and balance, making training both practical and engaging. Adult programs include both gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with fundamentals and all-levels options available. Open mat sessions are a regular part of the schedule, and drop-ins from other gyms are welcomed without a fee. Groundworks offers a focused youth program for kids ages 7 to 12, designed to teach self-defense, confidence, and discipline in a format that blends elements of martial arts and competitive sports. The facility is wheelchair accessible and located within easy reach of the Bethesda Metro station. The academy’s instructors draw on a wealth of experience and a shared Yamasaki lineage to foster technical growth and a love of learning in every student.
