Ground Theory Jiu Jitsu has its roots in Lawrence, Kansas, where head instructors Matt and Heidi Thompson—both 1st degree black belts—have built a school shaped by their own journey on and off the mats. After starting BJJ for self-defense while stationed at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey, the Thompsons trained under Pat Vacanti, a black belt under Phil and Ricardo Migliarese. Returning to Kansas after their military service, they saw firsthand how Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu could impact lives and chose to share that experience with their local community. Matt and Heidi are affiliated with the Subconscious Jiu Jitsu Association, receiving their black belts from Nicholas Gregoriades (4th degree, the first black belt promoted by Roger Gracie) and Brent Burniston (3rd degree, a Jean Jacques Machado black belt). Their teaching draws from this deep lineage, blending traditional fundamentals with modern approaches. The academy has also supported groups such as the We Defy Foundation for disabled veterans and Girls in Gis, emphasizing a commitment to accessible training for all. Classes at Ground Theory cover a wide range: adult and kids’ BJJ in both gi and no-gi formats, with sessions seven days a week. The curriculum starts with foundational techniques and concepts, allowing students—regardless of age or athletic background—to progress toward advanced material at their own pace. Drilling-focused classes, open drop-in policies, and wheelchair accessibility reflect their effort to keep training practical and inclusive for the Lawrence area.
