Ground Control

Ground Control in Rosedale is guided by John Rallo, a Renzo Gracie black belt who earned his rank directly from Renzo Gracie himself. Rallo founded the academy to provide a place in Maryland where authentic fighting skills could be taught by professional fighters and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitors, filling a gap left by traditional martial arts schools. His experience and connection to the Renzo Gracie lineage shape the academy’s focus on practical, effective training rooted in real competition and MMA. The academy’s curriculum reflects this approach, offering a blend of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and striking arts. Students can train gi fundamentals and no-gi BJJ under Frank Melro, alongside striking classes like Muay Thai fundamentals with Vince Mosca and boxing with Russ Shiflett. For younger practitioners, Binky Jones leads classes for kids and teens that prepare them for competition, emphasizing technical development appropriate to their age groups. Open mat sessions provide additional time for adults to drill, spar, and explore techniques outside of structured classes. Ground Control’s schedule supports a consistent training routine with options for all ages, focused on building fighting skills and conditioning. The academy’s mission remains centered on teaching real fighting techniques, combining grappling and striking in a setting designed for serious martial artists.
