Ground Control Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Fresno is led by head professor Luiz Pedro Ribeiro, who began his BJJ journey at age 13 in Passa Quatro, Minas Gerais, Brazil under Professor George Agusto. Professor Pedro brings decades of experience to the mats and guides the academy as an authorized Checkmat affiliate, connecting Fresno students to a respected international lineage. The academy is co-owned by Coach George San Mateo, whose martial arts background began in childhood and includes a third-degree black belt in TaeKwonDo, adding depth to the gym’s instruction. The class structure at Ground Control covers both gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with programs for kids as young as four through adults. Kids’ classes are divided into age groups, focusing on fundamentals and character development, and the schedule includes both gi and no-gi instruction as well as a kids’ competition class for those looking to test themselves further. Adults can train in gi fundamentals or join all-levels no-gi sessions, and the gym offers a members-only open mat for extra mat time. Drop-ins are welcome for standard classes, making it accessible for visitors and travelers. Beyond the core BJJ programs, Ground Control prioritizes values such as integrity, respect, and discipline, aiming to develop confidence and leadership alongside technical skill. The facility is wheelchair accessible and also offers online Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training for those unable to attend in person. As part of the Checkmat network under Leandro Vieira, the academy provides a direct link to modern competition techniques and a strong traditional foundation.
