The school was founded by Professor Julio Guerra, a 4th-degree black belt and Physical Education graduate who began his Jiu-Jitsu journey in Brazil in 1999 before moving to Australia in 2004. Professor Julio spent years teaching at Gracie Barra headquarters prior to establishing the West Ryde location, where he now leads a team of qualified instructors committed to the Gracie Barra philosophy of integrity, development, and brotherhood. The academy’s structured curriculum follows the traditional Gracie Barra system, offering classes for all ages and levels. Adults progress through GB1 (Fundamentals), GB2 (Advanced), and GB3 (Expert) programs, with a clear pathway from basic self-defence and core techniques through to advanced drills, no-gi training, and live rolling. The GBK program introduces children to BJJ in age-appropriate classes focused on confidence, discipline, and respect, while the GBF program provides a dedicated space for women to learn foundational skills and build confidence before moving into mixed classes. All instructors are certified through the Gracie Barra Instructor Certification Program and maintain current First Aid and Working With Children credentials. Training is held Monday to Thursday with both morning and evening sessions, and Saturday mornings, allowing flexibility for families and working adults. The facility features two mat areas, modern amenities, and a waiting area for parents and visitors. Gracie Barra West Ryde regularly hosts kids’ events, self-defence workshops, and community gatherings, reflecting its ongoing commitment to building a strong local presence through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
