Gracie Barra Toronto Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Self-Defence has established itself in the heart of Toronto, NSW, as part of the renowned Gracie Barra global network. The academy is led by a team of experienced black belt instructors: head coach Alexis Agapiou, with over 14 years of experience and a strong focus on fundamentals and youth development; Clint Smith, a second-degree black belt with a deep background in both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo; and Guilherme Dettogni, a first-degree black belt from São Paulo who brings authentic Brazilian technical knowledge to the mats. Program Director Lauren Agapiou, a qualified educator, oversees the kids’ and juniors’ classes, ensuring a structured and supportive learning environment. All instructors maintain current Gracie Barra certification, first aid, and Working With Children Check accreditation. The academy runs a full suite of structured programs built around the Gracie Barra curriculum. For adults, training starts with the GB1 Fundamentals program, which delivers core self-defence and foundational techniques in a systematic way. Students progress to GB2 for advanced techniques, more complex drills, and live training that includes No-Gi elements, before moving on to the GB3 Expert program for blue belts and above. Gracie Barra Toronto also offers a dedicated women’s program (GBF), which focuses on practical skills and confidence-building, and a comprehensive GBK kids’ program, introducing children to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu through age-appropriate classes that emphasise self-defence, respect, and discipline. Classes run six days a week, with morning and evening options on most weekdays and Saturday sessions available for families and busy adults. The facility features a 120-square-metre matted area with wall pads, a kids’ playroom, and amenities including change rooms, a water cooler, and air conditioning. Uniforms for trial classes are provided, and there is ample parking nearby. The academy’s approach is grounded in the core values of brotherhood, integrity, and personal development, with a clear emphasis on safety, technical excellence, and steady progression for students of all backgrounds.
