105 Terry Dr Suite 117, Newtown, PA
Gracie Barra Newtown Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Self Defense is led by Professor John Wilpert under the guidance of Professor Ricardo Almeida, whose roots trace directly to the original Gracie Barra and Master Carlos Gracie Jr. Professor Almeida, a black belt under Renzo Gracie, is recognized for his decades-long career in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and professional MMA, including time in the UFC, Pride, and as a King of Pancrase in Japan. This connection means students at Newtown train in a school shaped by both the traditional Gracie Barra lineage and the realities of modern competition. The academy offers structured Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu programs for adults and children, following the Gracie Barra curriculum and code of conduct. Adult students progress through gi classes such as GB1 and GB2, with additional no-gi training and a dedicated masters’ no-gi session for practitioners over 30. There is also a competition class for those preparing to test themselves on the tournament circuit, as well as open mat opportunities. Striking is represented with a kickboxing program led by Coach Nathan Espinosa, whose background includes over 20 years of Muay Thai and American Kickboxing, teaching both hobbyists and competitive fighters. Youth programs at Gracie Barra Newtown start as early as age three, with classes tailored for different age groups and skill levels. The school emphasizes character growth alongside technical development, a value carried forward by both the coaching staff and the late Professor Tushar Nene, whose legacy continues in the children’s curriculum. Parents are welcome to participate in some kids’ sessions, reflecting the academy’s commitment to family involvement and personal growth through martial arts.
