Gracie Barra Jiu Jitsu Mansfield

Gracie Barra Jiu Jitsu Mansfield was founded by Professor Herman Young, a 4th degree black belt whose journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began in 1994. After nearly two decades training under Carlos Machado in Dallas and earning his black belt in 2012, Professor Young joined the Gracie Barra organization to share his experience with the Mansfield community. His background in law enforcement—serving as a Defensive Tactics Instructor and working in Gang and Narcotics units—shapes his approach to teaching, emphasizing practical self-defense and technical discipline for students of all backgrounds. The academy offers a structured curriculum built on the Gracie Barra system, starting with the GB1 Fundamentals program for beginners and progressing to advanced classes like GB2 and GB3 for experienced practitioners. Classes are taught primarily in the gi, following the traditional Gracie Barra methodology, with no-gi elements introduced at higher levels. The kids’ program (GBK) is led by Professor Malcolm Scott, a 2nd degree black belt who has headed the youth instruction since 2015 and is known for developing students’ confidence and discipline both on and off the mats. Women’s classes (GBF) are also available, providing a focused path for female students to build skills and transition into the core curriculum. The staff includes Professor Malcolm Scott and Professor Herman Young Jr., both black belts with deep roots in the region, who bring additional experience in coaching, wrestling, and youth mentorship. Gracie Barra Mansfield welcomes students for evening classes Monday through Thursday, with Saturday sessions as well, and accommodates visitors and drop-ins. The facility is wheelchair accessible, reflecting the school’s commitment to making Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu available to the wider Mansfield area.
