Gracie Barra Hornsby

Gracie Barra Hornsby has been part of the Hornsby community since 2010, founded by Professor Marcio Lemos, a fourth-degree black belt with a long history in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and mixed martial arts. Marcio’s journey began in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and after moving through New Zealand, he settled in Sydney, bringing with him decades of experience, multiple national and state championship titles, and a passion for teaching. The academy is deeply rooted in the Gracie Barra tradition, with instructors certified annually and committed to upholding the values of integrity, brotherhood, and personal development. The team includes black belts like Patrick Hoult, Amir Tabibi, and Ivan Silva, each contributing their own strengths to the school’s teaching approach. Training at Gracie Barra Hornsby follows a structured progression, starting with the GB1 Fundamentals program for adults and the GBK program for kids. These classes focus on core techniques, practical self-defence, and the fundamentals of the Gracie Barra system. As students advance, they move into the GB2 Advanced and GB3 Expert programs, where the training becomes more technical and demanding, including complex drills and live sparring. The women’s program offers a dedicated space for learning self-defence and building confidence before progressing into the broader curriculum. All classes are taught in the gi, in line with Gracie Barra’s traditional approach. Classes run throughout the week, including early morning, lunchtime, and evening options to suit different schedules. Kids’ classes are available for various age groups, and adults can attend fundamentals, advanced sessions, and open mats. Drop-ins are welcome. The academy is closed on Sundays, but from Monday to Saturday, there is a steady flow of training opportunities for children, teens, and adults. The focus remains on consistent progression, technical excellence, and helping each student realise their potential on and off the mats.
