Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Self Defense - Avondale opened its doors in 2020, bringing structured Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the West Valley under the guidance of black-belt instructors with direct ties to the Gracie Barra network. Professor Michael Bruner, the school’s founder, began his training in California under Rener Gracie’s lineage before earning his black belt from Professor Flavio Almeida. Alongside Professor Joshua, a black belt who was recognized as the top brown belt in Gracie Barra North America in 2022, and Professor Brian, promoted by Master Carlos Gracie Jr. and Professor Flavio Almeida, the teaching staff brings a mix of competition experience and a deep commitment to the Gracie Barra curriculum. The academy follows Gracie Barra’s traditional progression, starting students with the GB1 Fundamentals program. This foundation builds technical skills and self-defense awareness before students move into GB2 Advanced and GB3 Expert classes, which introduce more complex techniques, live training, and no-gi sessions. The school also runs a strong kids’ program for ages four and up, emphasizing confidence, discipline, and anti-bullying skills. Women’s classes offer a focused entry point, and advanced students benefit from the school’s connection to Gracie Barra’s competition culture. Classes run seven days a week, with early-morning, midday, and evening sessions designed to fit a range of schedules. The facility is wheelchair accessible and maintains a consistent structure guided by certified Gracie Barra instructors, many of whom are active in both teaching and competition. Gracie Barra Avondale stands as a recent but rooted presence in Arizona’s BJJ scene, shaped by its instructors’ history and the broader team’s competitive strength.
