Gracie Barra Artarmon - Jiu-Jitsu & Self-Defence in Sydney's North Shore is led by Professor Carlos Schiezaro, a second-degree black belt under Marcelo Rezende. Professor Carlos brings a wealth of experience as a competitor, event organiser, and teacher, having served as Chief Instructor at Gracie Barra Sydney HQ and contributed to the growth of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu throughout Australia. Alongside him is Coach Coby de Been, a lifelong practitioner and brown belt, who grew up immersed in the art as the daughter of Australia’s first BJJ black belt, Professor Peter de Been. Their combined backgrounds ensure a high standard of coaching rooted in both technical expertise and a genuine commitment to student development. The academy follows the structured Gracie Barra curriculum, which is internationally recognised for its consistency and progression. Classes are offered across all levels and age groups, starting with the GBK program for kids, which introduces self-defence, takedowns, and groundwork in a safe and age-appropriate format. Adults begin with the Fundamentals (GB1), move to Advanced (GB2) as they gain experience, and can progress to the Expert (GB3) program for blue belts and above. Women’s classes (GBF) provide a supportive entry point, focusing on core techniques and confidence building. No-Gi training is included at advanced levels, and students are encouraged to participate in both gi and no-gi sessions as they progress. Training is available six days a week, with early morning, midday, and evening sessions to accommodate various schedules. The school is family-friendly, actively encouraging parents and children to train together. Gracie Barra Artarmon also works with local schools and childcare centres, offering self-defence and anti-bullying workshops as part of its broader commitment to the community. All instructors maintain current certifications in first aid, police checks, and working with children, reflecting the academy’s emphasis on safety and professionalism.
