Gracie Balmain Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was established in July 2016 by Joel Costello, a 2nd degree black belt under Bruno Panno and Royler Gracie. Joel grew up in Balmain and set out to build a school that reflected his roots in the community and his lifelong love of grappling. With over two decades on the mats, Joel brings high-level competition experience, including major titles such as the Australasian Open Weight Abu Dhabi Pro Trials and multiple Pan Pacific and Australian championships. The coaching team features a strong line-up, including black belt Lachlan King and Olympic wrestler Jayden Lawrence, who represented Australia at the Paris 2024 Games. Classes at Gracie Balmain cover a wide spectrum for both adults and kids. Adults have access to gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes, with beginner fundamentals, all-levels, and intermediate/advanced options throughout the week. For those interested in wrestling, both adults and kids can train under Jayden Lawrence, whose sessions focus on takedowns and skills that transfer directly to BJJ. Open mat sessions are a regular feature, giving members extra time to roll and drill at their own pace. The kids’ program is structured into age-specific groups, starting as young as 3–4 years old with games-based movement classes, and progressing through kids (5–8), juniors (9–14), and advanced no-gi for older children. There’s also a dedicated kids’ wrestling class for ages 7–12. All instructors hold current Working With Children Checks, and parents are welcome to observe classes. Classes run six days a week, including early morning, lunchtime, after-school and evening options to suit a range of schedules. The academy is located upstairs at PCYC Balmain on Darling Street.
