Golden Jiu Jitsu opened its doors in 2022, born out of a simple frustration with how most Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was being taught. Founder and head coach Avery Lorenzato, a brown belt under Rob Biernacki, wanted to build a gym in Golden, Colorado that followed how people actually learn—not just tradition. That meant ditching rote drills and long demonstrations in favor of structured grappling games, where every class is designed around play, problem-solving, and real skill-building. The first classes ran on mismatched mats borrowed from friends, and the focus was clear from day one: help adult beginners become genuinely skilled grapplers, and help kids grow into good adults as well as good athletes. The coaching team at Golden Jiu Jitsu is deeply invested in the science of teaching. Avery spends as much time studying motor learning research as he does on the mats, and coaches design every session to maximize live engagement, not just repetition. Instead of standing in lines, students jump straight into games with clear goals and win conditions. Both gi and no-gi classes are offered for adults, with fundamentals and intermediate sessions running throughout the week. Advanced classes let experienced members go deep on single positions, and topics are often chosen by student vote. For kids, the Little Lions (ages 4–6) and Golden Tigers (7–13) programs use games to build physical literacy, confidence, and character, with a strong emphasis on fun and safety. Classes run seven days a week, including open mat and a weekly MMA session that integrates striking fundamentals for grapplers. The facility itself feels more like an eco-studio than a warehouse gym, with natural light and plant-lined windows. Drop-ins are welcome, and new students are paired with experienced training partners to ease the first-day nerves. Golden Jiu Jitsu serves not just Golden but also students from Lakewood, Arvada, Wheat Ridge, and Denver West—many of whom heard about the academy from a friend who wouldn’t stop talking about it.
