Gentle Arts Jiu Jitsu

Gentle Arts Jiu Jitsu in Encinitas is led by Francisco “Sinistro” Iturralde, a black belt whose competition record includes IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi gold and European International titles. Sinistro’s journey began in Ecuador, where coach Fernando di Piero recognized his talent at a young age. His technical roots trace back through a classic Brazilian lineage: Mitsuyo Maeda, Carlos and Helio Gracie, Rolls Gracie, Romero Cavalcanti, Fábio Gurgel, and Fernando Di Piero. With years spent on the international stage and deep experience as both athlete and instructor, Sinistro brings a detail-oriented, modern approach to every class. The day-to-day training at Gentle Arts covers the full arc of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, from beginner fundamentals to advanced techniques. Students can expect a structured progression, with dedicated classes for beginners, all levels, and advanced practitioners. No-Gi is also a regular part of the schedule, reflecting Sinistro’s own championship pedigree in that format. Drop-ins are welcome across all classes, making it easy for visitors or traveling students to join the mats. Youth programs at Gentle Arts are thoughtfully divided by age, with classes for toddlers, two levels for kids, and a separate group for teens. This allows younger students to learn in an environment matched to their developmental stage and experience, while older kids and teens can take on greater technical challenges. The academy is wheelchair accessible and aims to make quality BJJ instruction available to a broad range of students.
