Genesis Jiu Jitsu Azle is led by Professor Karen Banes, a 6-time IBJJF Master World Champion and one of the first 500 female black belts in the Americas. Since opening the doors in 2014 under the guidance of Professor Albert Hughes and as an affiliate of Fight Sports and Master Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu, Karen has built a team that includes multiple IBJJF World Champions and coaches with backgrounds in wrestling, law enforcement, and youth development. The academy is known around Azle for its experienced coaching staff and a strong focus on both competitive achievement and personal growth. Classes at Genesis are structured to serve a wide range of ages and goals. Kids’ programs start as young as age 3 with Wee Warriors, and progress through fundamental and competition-focused gi classes for ages 4–12. There’s a dedicated daytime class for homeschoolers, and the staff includes coaches with a deep background in teaching and child development. For teens and adults, the schedule covers fundamental, advanced, and competition BJJ in the gi, as well as no-gi, wrestling, and self-defense. Women’s BJJ is a major part of the program, with Professor Kari Summers—a 4-time Master World Champion—heading up the ladies’ classes and open mats. Genesis Jiu Jitsu Azle also offers early morning sessions, open mats throughout the week, and specialized classes like stretch and strength for older adults. The facility is wheelchair accessible and welcomes drop-ins for most classes and open mats. The coaching team’s range of real-world experience—from law enforcement to collegiate wrestling—shows up in the way classes are taught, with practical self-defense, competition, and lifelong athletic development all valued.
