The academy is led by Jeff Nielsen, a 4th degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Marcelo Alonso from Team Carlson Gracie, with more than 35 years of martial arts teaching experience. Jeff also holds ranks in Shudokan and Gosoku-ryu Karate and coached USA Boxing for over a decade. His blend of traditional striking arts and grappling forms the backbone of the gym’s curriculum. The gym offers a range of programs, including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu both in gi and no-gi formats, emphasizing leverage and technique to control opponents. Parker Nielsen, Jeff’s son and assistant coach, brings competitive experience as a black belt under Marcelo Alonso and a two-time Alaska state champion in Bang Muay Thai, a striking system developed by Duane “Bang” Ludwig that mixes Dutch kickboxing, Muay Thai, MMA, and boxing. Additional coaching staff includes black belts Anthony Pacho and Billy Zimmerman, as well as brown belt Caleb Reuter, all active in professional MMA and BJJ competition. Training at Frostbite Vale-tudo includes open mat sessions where adults can drop in to drill and spar. The gym’s long-standing presence in Fairbanks reflects a commitment to developing both self-defense skills and competitive readiness across multiple martial arts disciplines, grounded in solid coaching credentials and proven fight records.
