FoCo BJJ is led by Professor Troy Thomas, an IBJJF 4th Degree Black Belt under Alliance founder Romero “Jacare” Cavalcanti. Troy began training in 1997 while serving in the U.S. Army Ranger Regiment and played a key role in developing the Modern Army Combatives Program. With over 30 years of military service and a Master of Business Administration from Colorado State University, he brings a disciplined and structured approach to teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The academy reflects his commitment to the fundamentals of the art, rooted in traditional self-defense techniques first taught at the original Gracie academy in Rio de Janeiro during the 1960s. The curriculum at FoCo BJJ is organized into clear progression levels, starting with a fundamentals class that emphasizes self-defense and proper technique through drills rather than full-contact sparring. Students are encouraged to complete around 50 to 60 fundamental sessions before moving on to intermediate classes, where more complex techniques are introduced and sparring becomes a regular part of training. Advanced classes focus heavily on sparring and are open to practitioners holding at least a blue belt. The academy also offers a morning session aimed at intermediate and advanced students, providing flexibility for those with busy schedules. FoCo BJJ includes programs for kids, led by Professor Troy, who emphasizes fundamental wrestling and jiu-jitsu skills alongside lessons aimed at building confidence and resilience. Open mat sessions allow students at the two-stripe white belt level and above to spar and refine their skills, while beginners can attend to drill and receive personalized instruction. Private lessons are available for those wishing to focus on specific aspects of their game or to catch up on missed classes. The facility is wheelchair accessible, supporting a broad range of practitioners in Fort Collins.
