First BJJ Riverton is led by Professor Carlos Santos, a 5th degree black belt and three-time IBJJF World Champion who began his journey at the legendary Carlson Gracie Academy in Copacabana, training under Marcelo Alonso and Marcelo Saporito. With decades of international coaching experience—including head coaching roles at Brazilian Top Team and the Emirates Jiu-Jitsu team—Carlos brings a direct Carlson Gracie Sr. lineage and a lifetime of competitive and instructional expertise to Utah. Since opening First BJJ in 2014, he has focused on offering authentic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, rooted in tradition but shaped by a global perspective. The academy offers structured Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes for both adults and children, with a strong emphasis on fundamentals, positional control, and live sparring. Adult programs center around traditional gi instruction, taught by Carlos and a dedicated coaching team, with additional no-gi classes led by experienced instructors. Women’s gi classes provide a focused setting for female practitioners to develop skills and confidence. Open mat sessions are a regular part of the schedule, encouraging students of all experience levels to train together and apply what they’ve learned in a dynamic environment. First BJJ Riverton is especially known for its well-developed kids program, with age-specific gi classes for children as young as four. Carlos personally leads many youth classes, emphasizing self-defense, anti-bullying strategies, and character development alongside technical training. The academy welcomes families, offers flexible drop-in options, and provides accessible facilities, making it a fixture for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the Riverton area.
