Enigma Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is led by Professor Erick Claros, a black belt under 3rd Degree Rocian Gracie black belt Leo Darrigo. Claros brings experience from his years as a New York City law enforcement officer, which influences the school’s focus on practical self-defense alongside sport and mixed martial arts applications. The academy traces its roots to Enigma locations in São Paulo, Brazil, and Ireland, carrying forward a tradition that values technique grounded in real-world effectiveness. Classes at Enigma cover Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for both gi and no-gi practitioners, with programs for adults and youth. The youth classes introduce kids to the fundamentals of BJJ in a structured environment. For adults, the curriculum includes striking through kickboxing, alongside grappling training. The academy emphasizes the strategic aspects of BJJ, including positional control and submissions designed to neutralize larger opponents, reflecting the art’s original self-defense intent. Enigma operates six days a week in Astoria, Queens, at a location accessible by public transit and equipped with parking and wheelchair access.
