Elite BJJ Academy

Elite BJJ Academy in Pocatello was established under the guidance of Professor Mark Massey, a 3rd degree black belt who earned his rank directly from Master Rigan Machado, an 8th degree red and white belt and eight-time world champion. Massey’s background includes early training under prominent instructors like Pedro Sauer and Carlos Gracie Jr., and a deep involvement with Judo through the United States Judo Association. After leaving a major franchise, Massey sought a more personalized, non-franchised path and connected with Master Machado, who entrusted him with leading the academy and standardizing a curriculum rooted in Machado’s teachings. The academy’s instruction reflects this lineage, emphasizing traditional gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu alongside no-gi training. Classes for adults cover all levels, led by Professor Massey and other coaches, including specialized no-gi sessions like women’s only self-defense taught by Coach Jessica and general no-gi classes with Coach Ramos. Open mat sessions provide additional training opportunities for students to drill and spar freely. Elite BJJ also maintains strong ties with the local military and law enforcement communities. Professor Massey’s service as a police captain and corrections chief informs the school’s support programs, which include scholarships and free tuition for qualified members. This connection underscores the academy’s practical approach to Jiu-Jitsu as a lifelong skill, reflected in its motto, “Jiu-Jitsu for Life!”
