EK BJJ - Eddie Kone Academy of Jiu-Jitsu in Walthamstow is led by Professor Eddie Kone, a 4th Degree Black Belt under Royler Gracie and the first European to receive that honour. With over twenty years at the helm, Professor Kone has established the academy as a centre for authentic Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in East London. His lineage traces directly from Helio Gracie through Rickson and Royler Gracie, and he continues to travel and train with Rickson Gracie multiple times a year, ensuring the academy’s teaching remains true to the roots of the art. Since opening in 2002, he has focused on real-world self-defence, technical precision and the personal development that comes from consistent training. Classes at EK BJJ are structured to suit all ages and stages, with a clear, progressive syllabus that breaks down complex techniques into accessible steps. Adults can train in both gi and no-gi formats, with sessions covering fundamentals, advanced techniques, striking for Jiu-Jitsu, clinching, and takedowns. The academy runs a dedicated beginners’ fundamentals class and offers private sessions by appointment. For younger practitioners, there are separate classes for ages 4-6, 7-10, and 11-15, all designed to build discipline, respect, and practical self-defence skills from an early age. There is also specialised training for law enforcement, focusing on control and restraint. Training is available six days a week, with morning and evening sessions to accommodate varied schedules. The academy is easily accessible from Blackhorse Road station and welcomes visitors and drop-ins. With a team of experienced black belt instructors under Professor Kone’s guidance, EK BJJ maintains a disciplined, values-driven environment where the Gracie tradition is preserved and passed on to the next generation of London’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community.
