DNA Jiu Jitsu

DNA Jiu Jitsu in Montclair is led by Professor Devin Moreno, a black belt with over 16 years of martial arts experience. Devin started training in Aikido as a teenager, wrestled in high school, and began Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at 19. His background includes law enforcement, and he brings that real-world perspective into his teaching. He focuses on helping students find and build on their strengths, whether their goals are self-defense, competition, fitness, or earning a black belt. The academy offers a full range of classes for all ages, starting with tiny youth classes for kids as young as three, progressing through fundamentals and advanced levels. Coach Ashley Marquez, a brown belt and former competitive athlete, leads many of the youth classes and also runs a homeschool program. Adult students can train in both gi and no-gi formats, with options for fundamentals, advanced techniques, and competition preparation. There are also specialty classes like wrestling, Muay Thai, and strength and conditioning, which complement the Jiu Jitsu curriculum. Beyond regular classes, DNA Jiu Jitsu supports students with personal training and self-defense courses aimed at practical skills and confidence. The training environment is accessible, with wheelchair access, and drop-in classes are available. The team’s combined experience and varied programs reflect a commitment to developing not just technique, but also the mental and physical toughness needed for real-life situations.
