Dekalb County Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was founded in September 2014 by Eric Hartwig, a second-degree black belt under Jeff “Big Frog” Curran, a noted jiu-jitsu and MMA pioneer. With nearly twenty years of training and coaching behind him, Eric built the gym in Hinckley, Illinois, to offer a place where students could develop skills in both self-defense and competition. The school operates as an affiliate of Team Curran Jiu-Jitsu, reflecting a lineage grounded in practical and effective grappling. Training at Dekalb County BJJ focuses on a combined curriculum of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai. Chris Hartwig, the head Thai boxing coach and also a second-degree BJJ black belt, brings a professional fighting background to the instruction, having competed in both MMA and Thai boxing at the pro level. This blend of disciplines is designed to accommodate a range of goals, whether students are pursuing fitness, sport, or personal development. Classes run mostly in the evenings throughout the week, with a schedule that supports consistent practice. The academy welcomes visitors and maintains an accessible facility, including accommodations for wheelchair users. The instruction emphasizes a one-size-fits-all approach, aiming to adapt the art and striking skills to each student’s needs without separating programs strictly by experience or competitive focus.
