Defiance Jiu Jitsu

Defiance Jiu Jitsu in Tacoma is led by Jesse Bardizian, a 2nd degree black belt whose journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began in 2002 during basic training at Ft. Benning and took shape under Professor James “300” Foster. With an educational background that includes both undergraduate and master’s degrees, Jesse brings a thoughtful, individualized approach to coaching, emphasizing that every student’s path in jiu-jitsu is unique. The academy’s lineage traces directly through Foster and Givalindo “The Arm Collector” Santana, back to the roots of the art with Mitsuyo Maeda and Carlos Gracie. At Defiance, classes are built around the idea that jiu-jitsu is not one-size-fits-all. Students are encouraged to find their own style and adapt techniques to fit their bodies, strengths, and learning preferences. This philosophy means that instruction is flexible and responsive, with a strong focus on helping each practitioner discover what works best for them on the mat. The academy supports this with programs suitable for a wide range of backgrounds, shapes, and athletic abilities. The weekly schedule includes adult open mat sessions, with drop-ins welcome, giving practitioners the space to experiment, roll, and refine their skills at their own pace. The facility is wheelchair accessible, and the atmosphere reflects the belief that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu should be approachable and adaptable for everyone who steps through the door.
