Council Bluffs Brazilian BJJ was founded in late 2022 by Professor Byron and Coach Britt after relocating to Council Bluffs, Iowa. Professor Byron began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at 42 and earned his black belt in December 2021 under Gracie Barra in Upland, California. His journey includes training stints in Japan, Mexico, and various U.S. states, which expanded his perspective on Jiu-Jitsu as a global discipline. Alongside his teaching, he established Fostering Jiu-Jitsu, a nonprofit focused on youth development through the martial art. Coach Britt, a purple belt who started BJJ in 2019 after a collegiate wrestling career, complements Byron’s experience with a strong grappling background and event coordination for the same nonprofit. At CBBJJ, instruction reflects the founders’ combined backgrounds in traditional gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and competitive wrestling. Classes emphasize technical growth and strategic progression, with a clear pathway from fundamentals to more advanced concepts. While the schedule includes open mat sessions for adults, the academy also supports community outreach through Fostering Jiu-Jitsu, integrating martial arts training with social development. This approach aligns with the founders’ belief in Jiu-Jitsu as a tool for life skills beyond physical technique. Training at Council Bluffs Brazilian BJJ balances structured learning with opportunities for personal exploration on the mats. The academy’s roots in Gracie Barra lineage and wrestling inform a curriculum attentive to both gi and no-gi grappling fundamentals. The environment is shaped by the coaches’ commitment to steady improvement and fostering resilience, making it a place where students can develop their skills alongside meaningful community engagement.
