Core Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy in Stanhope, NJ is known for its technical instruction rooted in the Alliance lineage and a practical, hands-on approach for all ages. The academy is led by Professor David Ross, a black belt under Alliance coach Mario Reis and the first American to earn that rank from Reis. Professor Ross has been teaching since his early days as a blue belt, and over more than a decade on the mats, he’s built a reputation for detail-oriented coaching. He is joined by Professor Flavio Goularte, who trained from white to black belt at Alliance Mario Reis Academy in Porto Alegre and brings significant IBJJF and national competition experience, and Professor Dan Novaes, a black belt with a background in both BJJ and Judo. The coaching team is rounded out by experienced instructors like Christina Viola, who supports the kids’ program, and Ron Koumaras, a brown belt and fundamentals coach. Classes at Core BJJ are structured to serve both beginners and experienced practitioners. The academy offers gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for adults, including all-levels classes, dedicated fundamentals sessions, and open mats. For kids, there are gi classes for ages 3–5 and 6–12, along with a no-gi option for the older group. The coaching staff emphasizes careful technical progression, with instructors often passing on competition-tested details and encouraging students to develop their own games through regular drilling and live training. Beyond the regular schedule, Core BJJ participates in programs like Adopt a Cop and welcomes drop-ins. The facility is wheelchair accessible and serves families from Sussex and Morris Counties. With its Alliance roots, experienced instructors, and a clear focus on technical development, the academy provides a consistent training environment for both recreational and competitive students.
