Control BJJ in Melbourne, Florida is led by Wade Rome, a fourth degree black belt under Master Ricardo Liborio and a founding member of American Top Team. With a competitive record that includes an IBJJF World Masters title in 2020 and six Pan American championships, Wade brings decades of experience to the mats. The academy’s instructor team draws from a deep pool of talent, including Leonardo “Leopedia” Itaborahy (black belt under Marcelo “Brutus” Silveira), Monte Massey (black belt under Romero “Jacare” Cavalcanti), Nick Giordano (Renzo Gracie lineage), and James Crunkilton (Nova Uniao), along with several homegrown black belts. This range of backgrounds supports a broad technical foundation and a practical approach to coaching. Training at Control centers around both gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with a full slate of classes for all ages and skill levels. Adult students can build a solid base in gi fundamentals, explore advanced positional work, and develop submission grappling in no-gi sessions. Specialized offerings include judo for jiu-jitsu, leg lock fundamentals, and competition-focused classes for teens. The academy also offers a women’s only class, open mats throughout the week, and review-and-roll sessions for deeper technical study. Young grapplers have several entry points, from the “Little Monsters” program for ages 3–5 to structured kids’ gi and no-gi classes and even a homeschool jiu-jitsu program. Teens can pursue competition training with instructor approval. Beyond grappling, Control rounds out its schedule with MMA fundamentals, boxing, and functional fitness classes, making it a year-round training home for both recreational and competitive athletes. Drop-ins are welcome at open mats, and the doors are open to anyone ready to step onto the mats and train.
